What is Intercession?

Intercession is the act of standing in the gap for others through prayer, bringing their needs before God. It's a powerful spiritual discipline that connects us to God's heart for His people.

What Is Intercession?

Intercession is one of the only activities that we can begin on earth that will continue after we die (provided the world doesn’t end before then). God holds it so important, that even after the Paschal Mystery, Jesus is seated “at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” Furthermore, the Father sent the Holy Spirit to intercede in our very spirits, with groans too deep for words (Rom 8:34, 26). Intercession is critically important.

In the Old Testament, intercession is often portrayed as “standing in the gap” between God and a particular situation or group of people. For example, Abraham pleads with God on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah, seemingly influencing God’s judgment—though the city is ultimately destroyed for lack of even ten righteous men. Similarly, Moses repeatedly uses his unique favor with God to advocate for the rebellious Israelites. In one striking moment, when God threatens to wipe out the people and start anew with Moses, it is Moses’ intercession that appears to change God’s mind and preserve the future of the entire nation (Exodus 32:7–14).

It’s not that God—eternal in His glory and omniscience—struggles to remain consistent in His decisions. Rather, God invites us to discover deeper layers of His being, layers that have always been present. In doing so, He draws us into a divine exchange: offering our lives on behalf of others. As Scripture says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him might not perish, but might have eternal life” (John 3:16). This is why Jesus is the perfect intercessor—because He gave His life to pay the debt we could never repay.

When our will – the core of our being and the place of decision-making (aka, our heart) – links up to the heart and will of God (revealed through His word and the Church), He is able to further pour out His promises and purposes on the earth through us. We participate in his saving mission, acting as an extension of Himself. “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why we utter the Amen through him, to the glory of God.” (2 Cor 1:20)

In the Gospels, Jesus continually exemplifies intercession in his own life, as well as telling us how the Holy spirit intercedes with us “with groanings too deep for words.” (Rom 8:27) Jesus lived a life of looking to the Father, receiving His heart and desire for that situation, and then releasing that heart through word and deed. That is the love St. Paul experienced, when he wrote “Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.” (2 Cor 5:14) Love becomes mission, because love demands a response. When we see the value of a person, or the pricelessness of an eternal soul, we are inspired to joyfully throw our lives away for the sake of that person’s good, through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity.

Your Role in God’s Mission

In prayer, it is our love that attracts the response of God’s heart. Dan Dematte, Executive Director of Damascus, once said that if you notice yourself complaining or frustrated about something, it’s because God has given you His heart to care about a person/people group. You have authority over that for which you weep. When we receive eyes to see, our deepest aggravations can become the places of our most powerful influence on the Kingdom.

What makes your heart burn? What stirs you to anger? What cause would you take a bullet for? What ache have you even possibly numbed because of its depth? That is the privileged place of encounter with God that God has already gifted to you. Will you receive Him? Will you partner with Him in that place to bring Him into the world? “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.” (Jer 29:12-14 emphasis mine) If you are filled with hunger, I challenge you to lean in deeper.

At FORGE, our hearts burn for family revival. We ache to see men restored and empowered to live as Godly sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers. We yearn for the domestic church to be brought back to life, and thereby to enliven the local church, community and world. We ache to see an end to the scourge of pornography and addiction, and the renewal of men who seek God with pure hearts and virtuous lifestyles. We want nothing less than the renewal of all men for the renewal of all families for the renewal of the Church for the salvation of the world!

If your heart is stirred with the same longing, join us in intercession. United in desire and hunger, we will witness God’s promises fulfilled in our families and in our time.
