Course 2

Home Church

About This Course

How do the best parents pass their faith to their kids?” There is no simple answer to that question, but this course will take you a long way. In preparation for this course, FORGE interviewed world-renowned experts in psychology, sociology, theology, and ministry. We then distilled the best of their advice to bring you six, data-driven lessons on raising your kids as Catholic Christians! Each lesson includes a 25-minute video and 12-page written guide. Our faith teaches that families are “churches in miniature,” or domestic Churches, but what does that mean for you? How do you build your domestic or “home” church? Parents will leave equipped to create a strong family culture, speak to their kids about the faith, and defend their families against the threats of the modern culture.

Trailer & Preparation

This module begins with observations about the power of story for all humanity and uses the notion of story as a springboard to illuminate the story of the gospel. Your family is a supernatural thing, “a Church.” As a Church, your family communicates the story of the gospel. Do you believe that story? Can you communicate it to your children? The practical application section involves a discussion of how to communicate the core truths of the faith in simple terms to children of various ages.

At a natural level, masculinity and femininity are beautiful. Unfortunately, the role of a man in his family is currently under harsh critique. Grounded in Old Testament family rituals (Passover) and the writings of Saint Paul, this module shows that fathers play a critical role in cultivating their children’s sense of faith and identity. Thus, fathers must be intentionally involved in faith formation. The application section includes practical suggestions as to how fathers might lead and witness to the faith in their homes.

Culture eats strategy for breakfast. Practically speaking, what qualities should a couple cultivate in the culture of their home to effectively pass along the faith to the next generation? We recommend the following: (1) authenticity, (2) orthodoxy within community, (3) authority and warmth. What do we mean by those qualities? Well, you’ll have to watch the module. The practical application gives concrete advice for how parents can lead their families in each area.

The sexual revolution has caused widespread pain and confusion. Fortunately, “where sin abounds grace abounds all the more!” Today’s Christian has more available to him/her for sexual formation than any time in human history. Parents have a sacred calling to preserve the good of sexuality and to reject the fake counterfeits which the culture offers. The application section includes practical suggestions for preserving healthy sexuality in marriage and passing the Church’s vision to children.

In addition to the sexual revolution, the world has sustained two other notable revolutions which have deeply impacted the family – the industrial and digital revolutions. These revolutions have brought about some good and some bad. This module highlights the threats of these revolutions and reminds parents that, “The industrial and the digital domains ought to serve your family…not vice versa.” The practical application gives practical insight for moderating digital media and busyness in your family.

This module begins with a reflection on the role of parents as primary educators, it then proceeds to give a series of age-appropriate suggestions for raising kids in the faith. Concisely stated, the module gives concrete examples as to how families might think together, serve together, and pray together.
